   My guess is because that was his college maybe even High School number.

   As long ago as it was when I began following the NFL, around 1960, that’s never seemed an issue worth concerning myself about, and so I recommend the same for you. They’re just not worth the worry.

   plus, in the nfl receivers can only wear numbers between 10-19 and 80-89

   I dont think there’s any reason at all.
   But if I had to guess, maybe its because Jerry Rice wore it? Idk.
