The Radio City Rockettes started out in 1925 making them 83 years old this year, and incredibly this amazing dance troupe is not only going strong but hosting crowded theaters every year. They started out as the “Missouri Rockets,” debuting in St. Louis to the fulfillment of a long-time dream for creator Russell Markert, who had been inspired by the Zeigfeld Follies of 1922. He wanted to create the ultimate tap dance team, a group of dancers who would be able to perform the highest kicks and be the tallest dancers around. They were discovered and brought to New York on December 27, 1932, by S. L. “Roxy” Rothafel, first performing under the name the “Roxyettes. ” The girls were an overnight sensation.
Russell Markert continued to stage and choreograph productions for the first 46 years of the Rockette’s existence. He finally retired in 1971, but not until he had left his mark permanently imbedded on the face of show business. Throughout his time as the Rockette’s creator, stage director and choreographer, Markert kept a strict format for the girl’s performances. 36 Rockettes would perform intricate routines moving as one dancer. Identical costumes were always implemented, and still are to this day, as well as an impression of uniform height, that is created by putting the tallest dancers in the middle with the shortest dancers on the outside.

Dancers need to be between five feet five and a half inches and five feet ten inches tall. They must be skillful in both Jazz and tap dancing.
