Can The Apple Store Repair Ipods On Site, Or Do They Send Them All Off?

Is the Apple store (any retail location) able to do repairs such as replacing faulty hard drives, etc on site in the store, or does everything have to be sent out of town to be repaired?

My son was able to get his fixed in the store.
I think you need to make an appointment.

Anything major is send off. Minor things such as battery changes can be done onsite.
